Description

Mapping Prejudice identifies and maps racial covenants, clauses inserted into property deeds to keep people who were not white from buying or occupying homes. Even though racial covenants have been illegal for more than 50 years, these racial restrictions laid a foundation for contemporary racial injustices and continue to shape the health and welfare of the people who inhabit the landscape they created.

Mapping Prejudice has employed optical character recognition (ORC) to identify over 80,000 property deeds containing racial language. We use Zooniverse, a digital platform that allows community members to contribute.

In this workshop, Mapping Prejudice mobilizes participants to document digitally racial covenants. This workshop training gives participants a deep dive into the content, history, and experience of working with primary documents to change participants' understandings of structural racism in Minnesota.
