Tony Carr
Description

Tony shares his personal story beginning with his experience as a 9-year-old boy forced to transfer into a predominantly white school due to mandatory integration. He also speaks about his family's experience living in the Jim Crow South during segregation and moving to the North during the Great Migration era. Tony’s presentation includes a display of his vast collection of Black Americana Artifacts, many that could only be described as degrading, offensive, and distasteful. Tony shares these dehumanizing images to bring awareness to the struggles his parents and grandparents and many African Americans had to endure and, importantly, how their strength and persistence paved a better path for future generations. Audiences will walk away with a new perspective and deeper understanding of the societally acceptable racial indignities that African Americans faced only a generation ago. Tony’s message is that progress is made when we acknowledge the evils of the past, no matter how much we may want to look away.
