Marsha Simmons/Neekan Binnasiw is an Anishinaabe from Berens River First Nation, signatory to Treaty No. 5, and proud mother of four children. She is a Policy Analyst and Researcher for the Intergovernmental Committee on Manitoba First Nations Health and Social Development at the FNHSSM. Her entire career has been involved in advancing First Nations health and social determinants at the community, tribal council, and regional levels. Marsha’s 20 years of service to Manitoba First Nations has resulted in her having strong working relationships with the communities from grassroots to professionals grounded on respect, kindness, and the utilization of strength-based approaches. She has presented at numerous conferences and trained many service providers in the areas of harm reduction, FASD, advocacy, suicide intervention, and holistic health. Through the anti-racism endeavours FNHSSM undertakes, Marsha is especially passionate about sharing the true history of colonization and racism to encourage critical thinking and conscientization in understanding White/Settler power and privilege and introducing self-reflexivity.
