Speaker Bio
My name is Jonathan Alexander Aguirre; I am a first-generation Mexican-Guatemalan student at the University of Minnesota Twin-Cities. I am a sophomore majoring in Biology, Society, and Environment. Growing up in south Minneapolis my identity was never challenged, it is easy to feel safe when everyone you know looks like you but when that flips as an adult, it becomes tricky to navigate your emotions. Understanding your intersectional identity allows you to explore the communities you never knew you were a part of, it opens your eyes to the representation you might or might not see in your everyday life. A lot goes into your intersectional identity, from your socioeconomic status and citizenship status to your race and ethnicity, even your religion gets grouped into your overarching intersectionality. You must explore and open up to every aspect of your identity to understand what disadvantages you might have to even what privileges you might have. When you do, that’s when your identity can't be challenged.
