Speaker Bio
Elder Katie L. Sample served as one of the first Black social workers in the Minneapolis Public Schools. She served for 25 years, after which she founded an African-centered educational enrichment program called the African-American Academy for Accelerated Learning (AAAL). AAAL operated from 1988 until 2009, conducting after-school and summer programs as well as ground-breaking bi-annual conferences for educators.
Ms. Sample endeavored to bring about systemic changes toward improving cultural competence among educators and enhancing the knowledge and appreciation of African history, culture and values among African American children.

She received her B.A. in Religious Education and Social Work from American Baptist Missionary (Chicago, Illinois) and Rockford College (Rockford, Illinois), with post-graduate studies in social work at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Ms. Sample now supports, mentors and encourages organizations and all endeavors that are designed to create a brighter future for African American children and youth.
