Speaker Bio
My name is Mariela Ajpop, I use she/ her/ ella pronouns. I am a political science major, double minoring in philosophy and social justice. My passions include activism and volunteer work. Using the privileged parts of my intersectional identities to uplift the voices of marginalized communities is essential to the social justice work and activism I am part of. Once I was introduced to what intersectional identity is, I was able to find ways it validated my truth telling and storytelling. Understanding each aspect of my identity allowed me to move through the world differently. It has been difficult at times, a pandemic and social media hasn’t helped either. Yet it was impossible to not further explore the systems at play that allow some parts of my identity to be oppressed while other parts are privileged, especially after the murder of George Floyd. I invite all to have an open discussion about how our intersectional identities are affected by our truth telling, systems of oppression and social media.
