Description
The legacy of racism and white supremacy threatens the fabric of our society. Our salvation lies in our ability to build sustaining relationships across racial and ethnic lines that will form the foundation for reconciliation and justice. My workshop will rely on the groundbreaking work done by the Highlander Folk School in Tennessee. Highlander pioneered training anti-segregation activists in integrated settings. Their philosophy focused on trusting people to dig into their problems and create solutions for themselves and their communities. Both Rosa Parks and Congressman John Lewis trained there, among others. SNCC was actually formed at The Highlander Folk School. Highlander developed a “yeasty process” to help participants come up with strong and effective action plans that they could take home and propagate throughout their communities. My workshop will use similar tactics to help participants learn easy to implement tools. I will help them break through the fear of rejection, fear of making mistakes, fear of failing and fear of the unknown so they can fulfill their own potential and guide their children as well. They will be empowered to dig into specific problems that are happening in their communities and brainstorm solutions together. We will accomplish these goals through role-playing, breaking into small groups to brainstorm and doing exercises that will help participants to identify the strengths they bring to the movement and provide the encouragement to use those strengths.
