Speaker Bio
Brandon D. Anderson is a lifelong organizer, third-generation military veteran, and Black queer abolitionist using technology to create a world without police. Born and raised in Oklahoma City, OK during the 1980’s crack epidemic and the 1990’s global HIV pandemic, he experienced police violence long before he understood its history and function in American life. And when his life partner was killed by police during a routine traffic stop, Anderson founded Raheem, the only independent service for reporting police in the United States. Since then, the scope of Anderson's vision has expanded dramatically. Now, he oversees a growing team of lifelong organizers and radical technologists building an alternative dispatching system to 911. Prior to founding Raheem, Anderson served five years in the U.S. Army, completing two tours in Iraq as a satellite engineer before graduating from Georgetown University. After successfully contesting a dishonorable discharge under the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, he helped 6 other soldiers in similar situations win honorable discharges. Brandon's work has been featured by The Atlantic, The Economist, Fast Company, The San Francisco Chronicle, and more. He's delivered acclaimed lectures at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Claremont McKenna College. Brandon now lives in Oakland, CA.
