Description
The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT), an international nonprofit headquartered in Minnesota, is dedicated to healing survivors and ending torture. By extending rehabilitative care to survivors, developing the capacity of institutions and individuals, and advocating against torture and in support of human rights, CVT works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its survivors have hope for a new life.
To heal the wounds of torture and other gross human rights violations, CVT has developed highly specialized models of care that have been proven to be particularly effective for people who have endured deeply traumatizing experiences. CVT works to reach as many survivors as possible, in the locations where that is most feasible, including Ethiopia, Jordan, Kenya, Uganda and the United States. CVT also has outreach programs to extend care and information to survivor family members and wider communities, as well as training for torture rehabilitation centers. Our policy advocacy focuses on U.S. policies affecting survivors of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, including refugees, asylum seekers and other immigrants, and CVT is moving to expand this work to include other issues associated with racial justice and police brutality. We also conduct specialized training for human rights defenders and their organizations in the U.S. and internationally.
