The 2024 Overcoming Racism Conference will look at the grievous harm racist policies and practices have caused the intersectional identities of Black, Indigenous, and other Communities of Color in the United States in housing, employment, criminal justice, education, and other sectors of our society. The conference will also highlight significant work underway in these sectors to bring justice and repair to those who have been harmed.

Conference Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending the 2024 Overcoming Racism Conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the harm of racism in numerous sectors in the State of MN
  2. Identify concrete steps toward repairing the harm of racism
  3. Imagine and name new possibilities for repairing the harm, and
  4. Know about different opportunities for sharing and collaborating across sectors

In addition, participants will be invited to address racism through participation in the Facilitation Racial Equity Collaborative (FREC).

Why Is This Year’s Conference Focused on Reparations?
Part of racial equity/anti-racism work includes acknowledging the harm created by past and current policies and practices that have historically harmed racial/ethnic/cultural communities and working to repair that harm. Although there is reparative work going on throughout Minnesota and across the region, many people are unaware of the harm created in the past and present and the importance of repairing that harm. The 2024 Overcoming Racism Conference will provide information about the harm created by past and current practices and policies and the work being done in 10 different societal sectors by large, small and grassroots organizations and committed individuals to repair the harm created by the sector they work and/or live in.

The 10 sectors the conference will focus on are:

  • Health Care
  • Education
  • Housing
  • Criminal Justice
  • Finance/Wealth Creation
  • Government
  • Social Services/Child Welfare
  • Faith-Based Organizations/Institutions
  • Employment/Economic Development
  • Local/Neighborhoods/Grassroots
