Who/What is FREC?

The Facilitating Racial Equity Collaborative, known as FREC, is a collaborative of individuals and organizations working towards just, equitable, antiracist communities throughout Minnesota. We are committed to engagement with multiple communities and ways of knowing.

Organizationally, the Collaborative is comprised primarily of volunteers who commit many hours organizing different educational opportunities and events to help individuals and communities become aware of policies and practices which disproportionately harm racial/ethnic/cultural communities, and also harm all of us.

What’s the History of the Conference?  How Long Has It Been Going On?

The first Overcoming Racism Conference was held in 2009.  It sprang from a 2008 Advanced Anti-Racism Training event held jointly by ASDIC Metamorphosis and the Cherokee Park United Church (Saint Paul, MN) Anti-Racist Team. The group that organized the 2008 advanced training event expanded and the Facilitating Racial Equity Collaborative was formed. The Collaborative organized the first annual Overcoming Racism Conference in 2009. The 2024 Overcoming Racism Conference will be the Collaborative’s 16th conference.

The Purpose of the annual Overcoming Racism Conference is to provide participants with inspiration, knowledge, connections and resources to be part of racial justice transformation in their particular setting.

Conference participants include individuals and teams who are part of racial justice transformation in their particular organizational setting, e.g. student/youth groups and organizations, workplaces, schools, government agencies, faith institutions and neighborhood groups.
