Description

“We Roll The Dice”: A Gamification of United States’ Housing Discrimination" In this session, you’ll learn about how Gordon Parks High School students developed a game, to combat gentrification in their neighborhood, and broaden the dialogue about intergenerational wealth and inequitable access to affordable housing.

One portion of this workshop is to equip participants with a knowledge of this student-developed game and to also connect a larger audience with the co-creation process of additional game revisions. Another part of this workshop, is to demonstrate “regenerative reinforcements” (youth leadership) for community challenges via state standard aligned curriculum. We will demonstrate high stakes student engagement, via Civic Engaged Storytelling, community action, and innovation. Students will talk about why this type of learning engages them, and keeps them connected with school..

This workshop will begin with participant sharing about their housing story, and brief overview of Midway Peace Park and its connection with Twin Cities housing discrimination (redlining, blockbusting, gentrification, racial covenants), participants will play the game, and co-create additions to the game. We’ll devote considerable time to playing the game, and then engage with an active debrief and constructive feedback session for game revisions.
