Description

Can educational institutions be antiracist? Education has numerous barriers that can make this difficult due to history, structure, and systems. We will define anti racism, identify barriers in education, and explore what steps we have taken to move our spaces towards becoming an anti racist organization.

As presenters, we will begin with our stories and what brought us to creating this workshop. We will discuss how our identities impact our perspectives within this conversation and invite others to share why they chose to attend this presentation.

There will be an introduction to antiracism with an interactive poll to create engagement with the audience. This will lead to a conversation around the barriers in higher education including history, culture, procedure and hierarchy, policy, structure and people.

After identifying barriers, we will start to discuss the work we as individuals bring to our work spaces to start the conversation around anti racist work. We will provide examples on how we challenge the barriers both as individuals and collaboratively.

Next there will be breakouts with case studies to identify why the case study is racist and what can be done to address the racism. We will identify individual agency.

We will then introduce the work of Deepa Iyer and their Ecosystems Map. Using this to provide context to how individuals can take their talents, strengths and knowledge to work to create change towards antiracist organisations.
