Description

Come hear our story of how we used our strengths as an administration team to create more equitable school wide systems. Through these systems we changed the culture of our building. We will talk through our actions and share samples of our systems.

Our session will begin with a whole group grounding and inclusion activity. Then participants will be put into three breakout groups, they will rotate through the three groups. In each breakout session we will share parts of our story then allow for discussion and questions.

Our session will focus around how a white female leader entered a school in turmoil. Her action steps to call out that change needed to be made, diversify the staff and create an administration team that would put equity at the forefront of all we do. Then, how we as a diverse team supported each other and the teachers to make major changes in our school to impact our students. True leadership is about having a trusting administrative team that can be honest, vulnerable, and commit to tackling the hard stuff.

Throughout our presentation we will imbed Culturally Proficient and AVID strategies. This will model for participants how we weave these strategies into professional development.

In each session we will share our story which will include:
Strategies for hiring a diversified staff.
PBIS and Behavior systems we put in place reduced our suspensions by 65%.
Strategies we used with staff to help them see change was possible and to take ownership of those changes.
How we collected data to guide the creation of our systems and determine our action steps and help change student behavior.
Ways we provided students an opportunity to share their perspectives as tools to impact change.
How we changed teacher team discussions from only talking about behaviors to talking about academic expectations and changing their classroom practices.
