Description

There are few dedicated spaces for mixed-race, multiracial/biracial, multiethnic, transracial/transnational adoptees, interracial couples and multiracial/mixed families. As two young adult, mixed women we feel the urgency to make this healing space through sharing stories, challenges and joys. We will also introduce a new project we are developing.

In this session, we want to hold space for mixed people. As two mixed women, we have experienced a lot of isolation and trauma around our identities. As a way to decolonize the space, there will not be a rigid agenda, and we want to be flexible. We will open with a chat and poll questions to slowly bring people into the space. Next, we will go over some group agreements to ensure everyone has room to speak freely in the space. With a short presentation to include some identity terms, we will talk about what terms people prefer because mixed people encompass a very diverse group. We will also introduce the project we are working on to gather and share mixed stories and conversations as just a small introduction to gather people’s initial interest and ideas.
The rest of the time will be spent mostly in small groups, with guiding questions to spark conversation. These questions will be pulled from a list of interview and conversation questions we have been compiling. We want to get at the heart of where some mixed folks are at right now. For example, how have we been processing this last year? How have we been processing our life experiences as a mixed person? What do we need to heal, build community and create joy? Finally, we also want to provide space to share mixed resources since mixed people are not highly represented in mainstream pop culture, activism, etc.
