Description

Manifest Destiny was a widespread belief amongst white settler colonialist starting in the 19th century in the United States to justify the expansion of the American empire and lead to the creation of concepts such as American exceptionalism and solidified in U.S. national and foreign policies. Manifest destiny was predicated on the idea that America was a beacon of hope to the (non-white) world and had a divine permission and obligation to commit horrendous acts of land theft, genocide against Native Americans and imperialism across the globe in the name of spreading "democracy" and civility. The presenters, one coming from a Native American and another a Southeast Asian refugee background; provide personal, historical and sociological insights to the deep psycho-socially harm this ideology has on individuals and communities. This presentation will also provide a historical and current day analysis of white American imperialism both domestically and abroad.
